an idea for freeing up bandwith

Post by -Dave- » 25 Apr 2003, 23:35

i noticed that other forums let their users download all the images and stuff on to the computer, so all the images they use are hosted localy and are not using up the websites bandwith. just an idea to save money or wot ever.

couldn't that potentially spread viruses though?

I don't think jpegs and gifs carry viruses.

It does seem a very rockin' idea though! Kev? Your opinion?

Also, I was thinking about having the low-avatar image size. But if it's hosted somewhere else then the image size could be bigger? It'd help for my avatar! It's a bit small.

iw as just trying to say that, kev could create a zip file which u download and unzip in to temporty internet files. So all the images come of your computer and not of the website server which uses up the websites bandwith

could write a script for the images that it will detect if you got the little download or something.

It could save SO much bandwidth thinking about it!

ok i have no idea wether of not this is even realistic, but,

theres 500 odd members on here, and about 200 of them have never posted a message. maybe if the accounts of members who havnt used SoS in x number of days should be deleted (if this would save band width)

It won't save bandwidth Twaz. Bandwidth is the actual information sent thru the internet to people. So say downloading a web site off here, that is a certain size of file being sent to you, and that uses up the bandwidth. If you get what I mean.

with that idea, would that mean everyone would have to download it? and would you have to change the link and source so it would run straight off of peoples computers? or would it do it automatically?

i don't expect kev's all that worried about bandwidth with the new server.. the best way to save it though would be to make avatars external again, like they used to be.. everything else that's served up is pretty much plain text anyway, apart from stuff like the snail logo and smilies.. but your browser will have cached all that anyway if it's doing its job properly.

ahh, fair enough. kinda off-topic, do you know any place thats good for hosting a fairly large amount of photos that can be linked externally? preferably free...the ones i've come across usually have some sort of catch..

http://www.photobucket.com.. you have to sign up, but it's free, and they don't delete your pics like picturehost do.

Dont know if i getting the jist of this but if a persons avatar is saved on their own computers then surely when they are offline SOS will not be able to access them thus rendering them completly pointless.....
