Wanted! Crap/Broken Guitars...

Post by Misc » 25 Apr 2008, 17:32

Have you got any crappy/broken guitars or basses you no longer use? I don't care how shit they are (that means you, Squiers) or how broken.

I'd be happy to take them off your hands in exchange for a bit of cold, hard cash as I have a... project... in mind.

Email ajpaynter (at) hotmail (dot) com if you're interested.

What's the project? I have a crap and slightly broken Epiphone that I couldn't bring myself to throw away because I learnt on it, but could be persuaded to part with if it was going to a fitting end.

I build stupid things out of guitars and power tools! Please don't let me have anything precious as I'm not the sort of person who has a lot of respect for instruments!

Here's a photo of my first modified guitar:
Image

It's an old '70s Les Paul copy by Avon, which I butchered and added a motor in place of the neck pickup. This has strips of plastic attached to it, so when it rotates they strike the strings. You can control the speed of the fan using the redundant vol & tone knobs - one is a general speed controller, the other is fine tuning. I've got better things to do with my right hand than strumming you see... (easy tiger). It makes a pretty awesome droning noise, a bit like a super-aggressive e-bow, which totally suits my industrial style. You can tune it to a power chord and play it with a slide, which sounds pretty amazing...

I'm attempting to build a two string bass at the moment, with a drill motor alternately plucking the strings, which are tuned an octave apart (maybe two). It's experimental, okay?

I've got another three or four of these stupid ideas in the works and I need cheap donor guitars to build the prototypes.

That is fucking awesome dude. I may well be tempted to let you have my old epiphone if it ends up as someone as cool as that. Let me think.

Sorry for the lateness of reply...

As much as I'd love to do that, I'm still honing my craft at the moment - hence the need for some cheapo instruments that don't matter too much if I completely fuck them up. When I've got the modification process down, found some decent quality parts suppliers and found a way to shield the motors from the pickups a bit better, I'll think about modding other peoples' (more valuable) guitars. I definitely need some practise first!

Glad you like the ideas though. Here are some pics of 'The Avonator' in action:

You should provide some audio samples of how these modded guitars sound.

Good work though! Looks good!
I do not have anything funny to say for my signature. So have this instead.
