If you do, then there was good news from a couple of forums this weekend, neither of which I can find the direct link to the stories because of the firewall at work...

Anyhow, both http://www.pspgen.com and http://www.dark-alex.org released firmware enablers that allow unfettered access to homebrew, ISO/CSO and PS1 games. Things that have been unavailable to the 3000's up until a month or so ago because Sony h'actually did a pretty good job of securing the PSP 3000.

In any case, if you have a 3000, and want to play emulators (anything from early ataris/sinclairs right through to PS1/N64) and backups then it's all doable now! :D

It's quite a different job to doing it for a 3000... How old, is it a 1000 or a 2000? Either way, if it's a 1000 or an early 2000 (newer 2000s use the same motherboard as the 3000), then you'll need a special "pandora battery" and memory stick. I don't know the whole process, but you need the battery to boot up the PSP into recovery mode, and the memory stick (must be an official sony/sandisk one) with some custom firmware and stuff on it.

With the older PSPs you actually flash over the firmware on the PSP, whereas the 3000 is a bit different, they only flash the new files to the empty space on the memory, and trick the PSP into starting up into a custom firmware type environment.

http://www.dcemu.co.uk might be a good site to start looking for info in, as well as http://www.mformature.com (though ironically enough that site is run by fucking children), they both have good info on them. http://www.pspgen.com is a good site, but in French, and http://www.dark-alex.org is a good Spanish one.
