eee pc

Post by kev » 12 Nov 2007, 22:27

i want one of these:

http://eeepc.asus.com/en/

Image

look how tiny it is!!

+ it's all solid state and has linux installed (Xandros), not much spec but then it's pretty cheap and pretty small. the screen is well tiny but you can rig it up to your monitor when you get home for a normal res.
and of course you can change their "easy mode" xandros and just use the normal desktop mode version instead.

i reckon it looks pretty cool on the videos and product shots and stuff, it's well cute check out the size in comparison to these things:

Image

Image

Image

check the size of the power lead too!! there's no brick!

should boot up pretty quick too on solid state 4gb drive... prob best to leave linux on there rather than swapping it for XP, but you can install xp on a SDHC card and boot from that by the looks of things!!
built in wireless too!! i guess all the mame / snes / psx emulators should work on it.. i might have to purchase one for some general web surfing and SSH shite, and installing php/apache/mysql on the bugger for testing through localhost type bizzle.... i'll let you know how it goes!!

could spend £100 more on a cheapo laptop but i guess with this it's the size and solidstate that's the bonus.. and linux ;) it's a bargin for 200 smackers i reckon!

full desktop mode:

Why has my above post changed from a well reasoned discussion with a couple of images to just one of the images on it's own?

 It's hideous! What's the point in a tiny, tiny computer? You'd put it in your back pocket, sit down and break it!

jesus, i hope they're going to up the ram and ssd to run windows! 512mb / 4gb isn't a lot!

some people seem to be worried about the windows swap file forever churning on the ssd too.. they're thinking it might not make the thing last too long as ssd's can only be used for a certain amount of times so to speak..

ps i have one!!! it boots up sooooo quick compared to windows, got it plugged up to my widescreen @ 1680 x 1050 so far, checked some shoutcast streams out, videos off my external harddrive and all seems to be sweet :D it's super speedy compared to my few year old pc.

I'm guessing it will be a very streamlined version of Windows rather than any of the versions currently available.

If they could fill the screen to fit the casing i'd probably get one actually, even though i have no need for one they do look pretty sassy.

I bought one of these for my missus for christmas about a week or so ago. They look pretty cool innit. What with loads of pubs having wifi access & the fact it can fit in a handbag, I'd say it was a pretty nifty toy. I had real problems getting hold of one though. I could only find Toys R Us flogging them and they were completely out of stock. I checked first thing in the morning one day and they had 1 unit on the website. My brother said that Asus were, at one point recently, logging a unit sold every 6 seconds.
Regards,

Jim

I can't understand why anyone would possibly want one of these tbh.

I'd really like one of these. I'm going to wait for the second generation though, and look into finding some sort of cheap audio interface. So i can plug a couple of mics into it and use it as a low cost portable recorder. :3
I do not have anything funny to say for my signature. So have this instead.

cos its affordable, small and runs a damn site quicker than anything window$ based for the same cash, it's solid state with super speedy boot times and running speed and Uber cute and there's no moving parts so it's Uber quiet too.

I'm so glad i've got one now too.. i can't stand spending money on upgrading PCs, especially the amount you need these days to be near the top.. and good ol linux is soooooo much nicer after using it for a while.. and don't worry so much about viruses/spyware/BLOATWARE!!!!! it's all about open source matey \m/

everyone that's seen it so far has been well amazed :thumb:

yeah, I guess it depends what you want from a PC. i think the tiny screen and keyboard and the fact that it wouldn't really be able to do anything I want a computer to do would piss me off.

Asus have launched a second generation of these glorified pocket calculators, if you're into that sort of thing.
