I've recently discovered this chap on The Sixty One. I've never heard of him before, but I've no idea how big or well known he is.
Reminiscent of Ben Folds etc.. He has got a shockingly beautiful grasp of melody and clearly an odd sense of humour. Don't know how you'd describe his style really, I guess "piano driven rock" would cover it, but in some ways it doesn't really cover it at all. He seems to like using 8-bit computer gamey sounds and getting a bit experimental as well. Maybe I'm getting old, but I guess in some ways you could accuse this of being middle of the road, but I don't think it's boring.
Some choice cuts for you:
The Cult of Karl - An Ode to Karl Pilkington
A Song About Being Frustrated While Watching Layer Cake The Movie Written In A Layered Style At Times Similar To Cake The Band - Exactly as the song title suggests
Bleach - Lofi 8-bit oddness
The rest of his stuff: http://www.thesixtyone.com/#/chrismerritt/
p.s. some of you are going to absolutely hate this.
hiphop, alternative, ragga, drum and bass, jungle, triphop, dub, reggae... + any other music style
