Panic at the disco

Post by SquidgyB » 25 Jul 2008, 22:16

Pet peeve of the week:

Song lyrics that make no sense and are only written so they rhyme;

"it's nine in the afternoon, your eyes are as big as the moon"

ITS NEVER NINE IN THE AFTERNOON. IT'S NINE IN THE MORNING OR EVENING.

Fuck's sake.

These guys are also cunts. Whiney cunts.
Well I could call out when the going gets tough
The things that we learned are no longer enough
No language just sound is all we need know
To synchronize love to the beat of the show

Actually, if, and only if, this line is about being on drugs, then I think this is quite a good lyric, nicely capturing a sort of tripped out nonsensical lunacy. However, I don't think it is.

Anyway, irrespective of that song, I disagree with your pet peeve on principal. Some of the greatest lyrics ever written make little sense.

Ok, some nonsensical lyrics do have their place, but this one particularly annoyed me. And I do believe you yourself have complained about convoluted rhymes used in songs, though it may well have been a song in an advert...

and yeah, I did, but my choice of target was orders of magnitude worse than yours.

it would appear that the fact that there isn't a 9 in the afternoon is, in fact, the whole point of the song. it's a rubbish song though. rubbish! hooray!

For what it's worth, I think the new Panic album is a really good pop album. I wouldn't say it's particularly whiny. It's by no means a classic but I'd put it up there with something like Popaganda by Head Automatica.
